In previous posts, I have looked at the background concept of Digital marketing and the problems that arise.  I have also explored issues relating to its integration and implementation in organisations.

Today I will cover the problems with ‘digital selling’.

We have at our disposal incredible computing power available in mobile devices.  Reps can have laptops or tablets with the most amazing information and graphics.  They can have the most complex CRM and tracking software to support their sales approaches.  If these are use in the right context and the right way, they have the potential to add value to the sales engagement and enhance the service provision to the customer.

I was working with a new business start-up last week - they have a great product (in fact, the world champion was blogging about their excitement for it without any payment or endorsement fees!).

They have a great product - but it is not in the market yet.

And here is the rub - the only thing that is holding them back from 'getting it done' are the small, simple things that a great business / marketing plan - distilled into a to-do list - would offer.

Often organisations which are not clear on what or why digital marketing should be used (see pitfalls #1!) fall straight into the second set of digital marking ‘traps’ – that of problems with alignment and integration.

How we define ourselves often sets the boundaries of what we believe is possible for us.  What if you could change your label and change your life?


I met with a client this week who reminded me of one of the ‘pitfalls’ of assessment.  At one point in a discussion, they came out with “I’m not very good like that BECAUSE I am an ENFP”.  I have had other clients say “Oh, but I’m a DI”.


In other words, they are using the outcomes of assessment tools that describe preferences to defend their behavioural rigidities or incapacities.  They become excuses as to why they can't live up to their potential.

Success - we all have our own personal definitions of what 'success' means to us, and what it would look like in our lives, our careers and our relationships.  Helping people become successful in their lives is what I do.  It is my passion and my craft.  

As I reflected this week on some of the great people I have had the privilege to work with, I pondered the question "What makes people successful".  Here are a few thoughts for a rainy Melbourne morning, I would love to hear any others that you have:

Successful people have high standards.  The 'not negotiables' for successful people are really clear and revolve around how they treat themselves and others.  Successful people value themselves and others, and set clear rules and very high standards for themselves in terms of caring, sharing, ethics and values.  People with highly flexible morals, ethics or personal standards are looking for the 'short cut' rather than the 'short path' to success.

Sometimes in business and in life we face situations that seem challenging, difficult or even outright 'overwhelming'.  Sometimes, we just don't feel that we have the skills or strategies to get what we need to done.

I attended an NLP refresher on the weekend.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching a 'master' of the material work so elegantly with the group, and I really appreciated being back in a community of people who sometimes see the world a little differently to the mainstream.
Watching someone struggle with a particular issue, the group facilitator asked them to act 'as if' they could already do the thing they were struggling with.  How would they be, what would they do?  WHo would they act like?

When I coach, I often use this frame (and many more of the success frames from NLP) to help clients that are unsure, overwhelmed, or help back by a limiting belief.  A visualisation of 'how they would be' and to mentally rehearse 'acting as if' can allow many clients to find a model that they can reference to get them through, or even a set of skills and strategies will become clear that they had shut themselves off from whilst focusing on the 'problem'.

What is your reaction when someone says one thing, but does another?  How do you feel?  Often we find that this lack of consistency is a major concern and we cannot find a reason to trust them.  When this happens with an individual or company that we are doing business with – how much do we want to avoid doing business with them?

 

And yet, the laws of business are so often broken that a ‘business law’ becomes a ‘business statement’.  That is, BL’s become…complete BS.  Whilst a BR (Business Reality) sets in.

I was coaching a client on their approach to decision making. In their risk-averse organisation, decisions were rarely taken, and this was leading to a high level of frustration in my client, who was really keen to get things done.

Taking decisions as a manager or leader involves a certain amount of risk. We can never have all the information. In fact, we take decisions where we cannot know all the information, because the knowledge of the success or failure of the decision we take exists only in the future.

As I worked with this client, I outlined how the process of taking decisions is really about risk and reward. In the human brain, we are more sensitive to avoiding risk than to seeking reward. This makes sense as a survival strategy, but in terms of making quality decisions will often reduce decision making to risk avoidance. In organisations that are ‘defensive’, this need for survival skyrockets and can bring decision making to a stand-still.

The customer described a set of ‘values’ that I deeply believe differentiates me in my market space, and were important to them in selecting me.
